Just finished reading Wrangham & Peterson's excellent 'Demonic Males: apes and the origins of human violence' (highly recommended) and found this beautiful family tree diagram on the back page.

Previously we had thought the Chimpanzee and Gorilla more closely related to each other than humans with Chimpanzee, but nay. It also illustrates wonderfully how, up until 1984, we thought of ourselves more unique in the great ape lineage than was actually true. From the book, Darwin sums it up nicely;

"If man had not been his own classifier, he would never have thought of founding a separate order for his own reception"

"The foot drawings in the Ape Evolutionary Tree on page 261 are based on images in The Life of Primates by Adolph H. Shultz (Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1969); Karen Kilmer of the San Diego Zoo provided information about the bonobo foot."
